TC01 is an automatic wristwatch and a celebration of simple manufacturing processes and honest materials
Background
A few years ago I had the opportunity to design a wristwatch for a client. With the knowledge I gained during that project I felt inspired to design a wristwatch based on my own values and preferences.
The idea
The main design driver for this project was the idea that I wanted to be able to build the case myself. This forced me to design the case so that it could be made using simple tools and materials. Instead of hiding this fact I decided to highlight it and bring attention to the tool marks left by the milling process.
Process
I started with quick sketches continued developing the ideas with digital 2D and 3D tools. Once I had a good idea of what I wanted to achieve I used CAD and physical models to refine form, proportion and scale.
Inspiration
The main inspiration for the design of the watch was the characteristics of simple tools and honest materials.
